Description Mehmet Giritli 2013-10-10 09:10:43 UTC
I never had a problem with nm ever before until I updated to nm-0.9.8.6 from 0.9.8.4 and nm stopped working. I first removed entire /etc/Networkmanager folder to start from zero. But now I can't even add profiles for wired connections or connect to wireless. When I try nothing happens. I see these in my logs:

I tried downgrading back to 0.9.8.4 which worked flawlessly before, but it has the same problem as well now!

The update to 0.9.8.6 changed the settings backend from ifnet to keyfile for systemd users.

So in 0.9.8.4, your systemwide connection information was stored in /etc/conf.d/net; and now, in 0.9.8.6, it's in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/*

To temporarily restore the old behavior, in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf change

plugins=keyfile

to

plugins=ifnet,keyfile

However, we want to get keyfile working bug-free, so we are interested why it broke for you.

What desktop environment are you using (gnome-2, gnome-3.6, gnome-3.8)?
Is your user a member of 'plugdev' group?
What versions of the following packages do you have, and with what USE flags: net-misc/networkmanager, gnome-extra/nm-applet, dev-libs/glib, dev-libs/dbus-glib, sys-auth/polkit ?
Comment 2 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2013-10-10 17:17:04 UTC
You should also be able to remove /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf entirely and it will use keyfile plugin by default

One of the first things I tried. Nope, it doesn't make any difference. Still can not add any profile for wired or connect to a wireless.

gnome 3.8

yes

emerge -pv net-misc/networkmanager gnome-extra/nm-applet dev-libs/glib dev-libs/dbus-glib sys-auth/polkit

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

This is what I did initially and got into this situation. I'll try again though.
Comment 5 Mehmet Giritli 2013-10-10 17:35:23 UTC
I found this in the logs:

Could not load plugin 'ifnet': /usr/lib64/NetworkManager/libnm-settings-plugin-ifnet.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

This happened after I was switching back and forth between 0.9.8.4 and 0.9.8.6. I was able to start the service when I upgraded to 0.9.8.6 so this wasn't there. Now I can't start the service because of this error.

I run revdep-rebuild but it didn't find anything. How do I fix this?
Comment 6 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2013-10-10 17:46:12 UTC
Have you checked for any files under /etc/NetworkManager that could still point to ifnet?

Well, I still have

[main]
plugins=ifnet,keyfile

[ifnet]
managed=true
auto_refresh=false

as suggested in Comment 1. Leaving only

[main]
plugins=keyfile

brings us back to square one: all of the above mentioned problems. But yea, service starts properly then...

Then, lets keep with keyfile to know what is causing that problems. For that, I think you should simply remove the /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to let it stick on defaults. And run 0.9.8.6 with systemd USE flag enabled (that will make you use keyfile plugin)

Once you are in that situation, if still failing to connect to your connection, try to configure them again from scratch

Even tough this is exactly what I did before reporting the bug, I did it all over again. Still can not connect to any wireless or create a new profile for the wired connections. This is what I have in logs:

Umm, looks like there are some invalid old configs in your system. I would remove (move to other location ;)) all your stuff in /etc/NetworkManager* to ensure all is reconfigured from scratch. Maybe that configs come from really old NM versions

I removed entire /etc/NetworkManager when I tested this. Where else could those old configs be?
Comment 12 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2013-10-10 19:24:24 UTC
They are usually inside /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections

If you don't have any /etc/NetworkManager/ *directory* and keep getting that errors about problems with some settings even without anything configured, maybe they come from some user specified settings (but I don't remember the exact directory inside HOME where networkmanager places them, as I have always configured by networks for all users)

I checked .local, .config and also dconf settings. I got nothing.

I changed to a user I never used except for once in the past and I have the same problem.
Comment 14 Alexandre Rostovtsev (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-10-11 03:59:58 UTC
Perhaps you are seeing your user's (not systemwide) old connections stored using gconf.

Using gconf-editor, look under system → networking → connections (or in ~/.gconf/system/networking/connections/ if you prefer).

my gconf does not have networking folder under system. As to the gconf folder in user dir, I got only .pulseaudio under system.
Comment 16 Mehmet Giritli 2013-10-11 07:13:20 UTC
So in order to verify the validity of this "leftover settings" theory I created a completely new user from scratch. It is showing exact same symptoms.

Doesn't this show that there is something else other than old settings residing somewhere in the system?

Guys, I don't wanna pressure you or anything but my computer is really inconvenient to use with this problem. Do you have any other suggestions?

I don't see what can be wrong in your setup causing this to appear. Reading your last posted logs:

Also, why doesn't NM create a new folder under /etc when there is none? Is this created only when I emerge NM?

I guess you are still running syslog-ng even on systemd (otherwise, messages wouldn't be updated and you should look at journalctl)

Try re-emerging NetworkManager ot get dirs recreated

Yes, I'm running syslog-ng.

There is now a bug report for this in gnome bugzilla.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=710091
Comment 24 Mehmet Giritli 2013-10-20 09:00:27 UTC
Finally fixed it! It was caused by ccache feature when used for compiling. Disabling it compiled a working nm. Thanks all for your help.
