Description Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2013-08-27 16:54:45 UTC
Looks like people start to complaint about they configuring their systems to use openrc while following Handbook to, finally, migrate to systemd (this will be more noticeable for people willing to run latest Gnome versions)

I have been reviewing Handbook and, in short term, I think we could simply add some notes pointing to wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Systemd

I think the note should be placed at the end of 6.b section (before setting timezone and compiling the kernel)

Something like another 6.b section, called "Optional: Using systemd" with the following content:

"""
The remainder of the Gentoo Handbook focuses on OpenRC as the default init support system. If you want to use systemd instead, or are planning to use Gnome 3.8 and later (which requires systemd), please consult the systemd [1] page on the Gentoo wiki as it elaborates on the different configuration settings and methods.

The Gentoo Handbook can then be followed with that page in mind.
"""

We can then look at how the instructions can be merged properly. ok?

Looks nice to me as a temporal solution as, that way, people will get the wiki page and, hopefully, know that commands like rc-update should be replaced by its systemd replacements and will read about syslog-ng stuff and so. I would also add that "In case of "conflictive" (need to find a better word) instructions, those from wiki page needs to be taken over Handbook ones (kernel configs, grub options...)"

About a complete merging, I am still unsure about how that could be accomplished.
Maybe the Handbook should be splitted in a common part (the installation part) and two alternatives for systemd and openrc instructions to configure the system in an equivalent way. But that could be a lot of work :| (for example, grub/lilo part should be replicated for both, the same for kernel configuration)

i'd prefer to not have any reference in the handbook at all -- we shouldn't mention things we don't actually document. the handbook is only concerned with what comes on the installation stages/media -- things that are considered more or less the "default" install, which systemd is not.

if we want to put it in an overall install documentation index, that's fine, but it's a confusing digression to mention in the handbook: "oh, here's this totally different gentoo base/background that changes how everything operates, so on the off-chance you decide to use it, go familiarize yourself with it elsewhere. here's a link."

I strongly disagree, I don't think adding a note pointing to the wiki page will hurt anybody. Instead, it will make people wanting to run it to not need to double their work

I think Systemd is sufficiently documented on the wiki already. It can always be better (right now it's perhaps too huge a document) but considering that Systemd is already marked as stable for major architectures and that a big user project (GNOME 3.8) depends on it, I think it makes sense to point users to it at first.

It won't be that easy to integrate it in the handbook at first sight - I see some possibilities, but nothing that gives me the "aha" moment of clarity ;-) So let's focus first on the paragraphs mentioned. That doesn't clutter the handbook afaics

Could you look at this? (the link pointing to the wiki page, the rest will be much more difficult)

Thanks :)

Committed to CVS; should show up on the site in an hour or so.
