Description Helmut Jarausch 2013-07-30 14:39:24 UTC
I've been running a Windows 7 (professional) guest with Virtualbox on my
GenToo system for some years.
But since a short time I have a broken network either due to Virtualbox or due to some (automatic) Windows updates. I have tried several emulated network adaptors.
This occurs with Linux kernels 3.9.x as well as 3.10.x

The situation is more than strange.

Sometime using a backed up Virtualbox image, the network seems to work but only for a very short time (some minutes?)

Windows error analyzing tools don't see any network problems but it does not work.

Trying ping -n 100 <IP>, only a few packets come back but with a large delay (40-50 times larger delay compared to ping on the GenToo host)
Most of the time I get a "timed out" or "network is unreachable" error message.

I've tried the most recent Virtualbox 4.2.16 as well as 4.1.26

Can anybody suggest any means to analyze and fix this problem?
Many thanks for a hint,
Helmut

All I can say right now is that I don't have any network problems with any of my VirtualBox VMs. My two Windows7 VMs as well as my Windows8.1 Test-VM and all four Gentoo VMs are running perfectly fine regarding the network connectivity.

What kind of network configuration do you use? NAT? Bridged Network?

If it's not too expensive you might want to try app-emulation/virtualbox-bin and see if it fails there as well. Just keep in mind once you switch between the -bin and non-bin version (or vice versa) you have to re-login into X to get the environment variables right.

I've always used NAT and tried several NICs.
I'll try the binary version soon.
Thanks!
