This is (kind of) "maintainer choice" problem.

Back in 1.0.26, hdajackretask program was added upstream, while ebuild was not updated in this regard.

In this release, this was noticed, but while gtk2 and gtk3 programs are independent, a choice was made not to add a separate useflag for the gtk3 program.

On the other hand, with gtk3 already on 3.8,...
Comment 5 Mark 2013-05-03 12:15:27 UTC
Rafal,

If indeed this is a maintainer choice issue it seems a very unnecessary thing to require two versions of gtk for any single package. Where is the choice in that? In my case I have intentionally chosen my desktop and applications to avoid gtk+-3. And now a sound utility needs both gtk 2 and 3?

trying to stay with gtk2 is dead end. packages have been bumped explicitly to gtk+-3 and multiple packages have already dropped the old gtk+-2 version.

USE="gtk" means latest version of the toolkit, or what is required

i don't like the idea of adding another USE flag for this
Comment 7 Mark 2013-05-07 14:01:35 UTC
Samuli,

I hear what you are saying. I do not understand code, but when I look at the dependencies for alsa-tools I see (equery -g):

* dependency graph for media-sound/alsa-tools-1.0.27-r1
 `--  media-sound/alsa-tools-1.0.27-r1  ~amd64
   `--  media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27-r2  (>=media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27) ~amd64
   `--  dev-python/pyalsa-1.0.26  (>=dev-python/pyalsa-1.0.26) amd64
   `--  x11-libs/fltk-1.3.2  (>=x11-libs/fltk-1.3.0) ~amd64
   `--  x11-libs/gtk+-2.24.17  (x11-libs/gtk+) ~amd64
   `--  x11-libs/gtk+-3.6.3-r2  (x11-libs/gtk+) ~amd64
   `--  virtual/pkgconfig-0  (virtual/pkgconfig) amd64
   `--  sys-devel/automake-1.12.6  (>=sys-devel/automake-1.12) amd64
   `--  sys-devel/automake-1.13.1  (>=sys-devel/automake-1.13) ~amd64
   `--  sys-devel/autoconf-2.69  (>=sys-devel/autoconf-2.68) amd64
   `--  sys-devel/libtool-2.4.2  (sys-devel/libtool) ~amd64
[ media-sound/alsa-tools-1.0.27-r1 stats: packages (11), max depth (1)

which looks (to me) like alsa-tools wants both versions of gtk. That is my complaint. And why put in another use flag? Seems simple to just make either gtk2 or gtk3 satisfy alsa-tools.

gtk2 might be a "dead end," but it is still supported in portage and what I choose to use.

modified ebuild with [hdajackretask] useflag to avoid GTK+3

Here's a modified ebuild of alsa-tools-1.0.27-r1 that let's the user decide whether he wants hdajackretask, implying the build of gtk+:3.
Note that building hdajackretask is the default, so only people who care about avoiding gtk+:3 actually feel the (positive) difference.

If anyone needs help using this ebuild, see the layman docu: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Layman
