I don't know if it's a bug or not but since the update from 3.9_p1-r4 version mid Mars, ntpd is suddenly very verbose in /var/log/messages i.e.
I've never seen this before with others "p" version (I don't know why the naming has change (ebuild re-write?)) but maybe this comportment is "normal" or just a problem server-side on mirrors ?
Btw, only based on this bug i think, most of wiki seems to be accorded on the fact that openntpd is obsolete and unmaintained upstream. I really like more this prog than net-misc/ntpd (very "light", just a client-side, no root socket listenning, etc) and It's sad if it's true but fedora has her own objective for capitalize on a prog or not and we have ours ;-)
Maybe someone from our team could verify this ?

ps: sorry form my english

Reproducible: Always

net-misc/openntpd-20080406 is debian's version of openntpd, which is basically 3.9 plus a lot of patches, which have accumulated over the years.

ntpd has no option to tweak its verboseness. Have a look at <http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/src/usr.sbin/ntpd/> maybe you can add such an option yourself and reopen this bug with a patch later.
Comment 5 Paul B. Henson 2013-11-12 23:28:31 UTC
I guess I'm a little bit late on this bug, having only come across it after trying to figure out why a recent update broke my ntpd syslog configuration, but I think this is a bad idea:

* If you don't want ntpd noise in /var/log/messages, update your syslog configuration to put it elsewhere

* running with -d to log to stderr actually generates more noise than logging via syslog

* Now there is no way to rotate the ntpd log without restarting ntpd 8-/, *and* this update provides no mechanism to rotate at all, resulting in an endlessly growing log file, as opposed to the previous version which was handled by the default logrotate config.

I can't remember ever once having any issue with ntpd delaying the boot process, but if that is a problem for some people, resolving it without breaking syslog support and log rotation would seem to be a better way to go.
