I too ran into this problem running the JFS file system.  A note should be added to the installation docs, at the very least.

We should make the mount command issue additionally the "-o iocharset=utf8" option when mounting JFS partitions.

BTW, this one is a duplicate of http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42859
It's not a problem with the version of kbd, but a problem with the filesystem or all the kbd packages.

ok, I think I've fixed this by manually unpacking in the ebuild instead of using the portage unpack function.  Please re-open if it's still broken for you.

I've also marked 1.12-r2 stable
