These errors aren't related to gcc-4.8. It looks like binutils-2.23.2 is the cause. PS, can you hold off filing bugs with the hardened-overlay 4.8.0? i'll have an official version in the tree in a day or two.
This is a classical underlinking issue: g_module_symbol is used in dict/src/lib/pluginmanager.cpp but not linked to. Just add gmodule-2.0 to pkg-config check to fix this. Patch for stardict-3.0.4 is here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=356886 (bug 451730) If it doesn't apply, you got the idea.
Created attachment 362324 [details, diff] patch which fixes this underlinking problem I confirm that this is just underlinking issue with recent binutils. My patch is essentially the same as the one for 3.0.4 reffered above.
Created attachment 362326 [details, diff] ebuild using the patch There is a minor additional problem when running autoreconf after aplying the patch to dict/conrigure.ac. It is similar to bug #439894 (but I can trigger it only with modified ebuild which runs eautoreconf!): configure.ac:310: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_GCONF_SOURCE_2 If this token and others are legitimate, please use m4_pattern_allow. See the Autoconf documentation. The problem is not entirely new in gentoo (e.g. some versions of evince, ibus, compiz, libcanberra or celestia). The build systems just wants to use the gconf macro even when building without gnome. Here I have chosen the easiest way of fixing this, i.e. to remove the macro completely when USE=-gnome.
fixed by `sed` in 3.0.4's ebuild
