turns out the logs are not present under the specified path: /var/tmp/portage/dev-vcs and the install was made despite failing the tests: atom acc # git --version git version 1.7.12.4 atom acc # I'll have to rebuild using whatever the flag is that preserves the logs. Wouldn't it be helpful if a failure on tests that do not break an upgrade also suggested the flag used to preserve the requested logs.

My earlier comment about the files not being preserved was probably in error. I was on a different server (atom instead of hermes); hence the temporary directory I was looking in did not exist on that server. I did run the emerge with FEATURES="noclean" so any other files are on that server if needed further on in the analysis of this bug.
