During configure phase, build fails at the following point:

checking whether objc really works... no
I don't seem to be able to use your Objective-C compiler to produce
working binaries! Please check your Objective-C compiler installation.
If you are using gcc-3.x make sure that your compiler's libgcc_s and libobjc
can be found by the dynamic linker - usually that requires you to play
with LD_LIBRARY_PATH or /etc/ld.so.conf.
Please refer to your compiler installation instructions for more help.
configure: error: The Objective-C compiler does not work or is not installed properly.

This happend after upgrading to sys-devel/gcc-4.6.3.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade gcc to sys-devel/gcc-4.6.3
2. Try to merge gnustep-base/gnustep-base-1.24.0-r1
Actual Results:
Build fails at configure phase.

Expected Results:
Package builds and installs without failure.

Thanks for the report, can you send the config log also? This will show the actual gcc error:

!!! Please attach the following file when seeking support:
!!! /var/tmp/portage/gnustep-base/gnustep-base-1.24.0-r1/work/gnustep-base-1.24.0/config.log

Here's the config log. I forgot to attach it earlier. Sorry about that.

Thanks, that confirms my theory: if I recall correctly, the soname for libobjc changed in GCC 4.6

So the gnustep build system needs to be informed of this change, you can remerge gnustep-make to do so (before trying rebuilding gnustep-base)

If you have some other gnustep packages installed, or to be on the safe side, emerge and run gnustep-updater (with -l option), it should do all the work for you

Thanks. Everything builds now.

Marking fixed thanks to gnustep-updater then :)
