Description Till Schäfer 2013-01-10 10:07:26 UTC
When emerging sci-mathematics/maxima-5.18.1 the merge process needs user input to continue. When using --jobs this is not possible and portage get stuck (waits forever)

Mr. Grozin,

is this because of the issues with asdf/asdf2?

@reporter: Can you please upload an attachment with the output of "emerge -e -pv maxima" ?

Comment 4 Andrey Grozin gentoo-dev 2013-01-11 10:48:17 UTC
This is a *very* old version. In more recent ebuilds, a patch was added which adds

--no-sysinit --no-userinit

to any sbcl invocation; then sbcl does not load asdf (which is not needed for building maxima), and the problem is absent. This fix was introduced a couple of versions ago; I suppose nobody have bothered to patch such an ancient ebuild. You can try to apply maxima-5.29.1-sbcl.patch.
Comment 5 Till Schäfer 2013-01-11 11:26:15 UTC
the "ancient" ebuild is the current stable ebuild
Comment 6 Andrey Grozin gentoo-dev 2013-01-12 04:41:14 UTC
It's not reasonable to use this very old version. And it's difficult to stabilize some new version because it depends on 5 lisp implementations (depending on the USE flags), and for each of them some sufficiently new version should be stabilized before. I think the only reasonable way to run maxima is to use it, and lisps, from ~arch (or better from the lisp overlay).
As seen from the bug #411453, at some moment during the lifetime of maxima-5.27.0 some change in dev-lisp/gentoo-init and/or dev-lisp/asdf in the main tree has broken compilation of maxima and fricas (see bug #423267) with sbcl. This has been fixed (or rather worked around) by patching maxima and fricas to always add --no-sysinit to all sbcl invocation (because with sysinit turned on, and the init file from gentoo-init in the main tree, sbcl fails). By the way, with gentoo-init and asdf from the lisp overlay things were OK all the time, even without the --no-sysinit patch.
To summarize: my strong advice is not to use the stable maxima and stable lisps (especially sbcl) from the main tree.
