Upgraded from vmware-workstation-8.0.4.744019-r1 to vmware-workstation-9.0.1.894247

Performed the following as root:

# emerge --config vmware-workstation
Configuring pkg...

Stopped all configured services on all networks
Backed up existing network settings to backup file "/tmp/vmware.2DPncn"
Restored network settings

# /etc/init.d/vmware start

 * Starting VMware services ...                                                                [ ok ]

Started all configured services on all networks [ ok ]

Run as user:

$ vmware
Aborted

Downgrading to vmware-workstation-8.0.4.744019-r1 and vmware executes as expected.

I played with this on and off for several weeks using the test ebuilds trying to figure this out and have had no success.

Thinking that it may have been a package that was corrupted, didn't have proper patches, etc, I performed an emerge -e vmware-workstation. Unfortunately this didn't change the outcome.

I installed vmware-workstation on my desktop which has similar useflags as my laptop and it executes without issue. I am beginning to think it may be something with my laptop, but downgrading to version 8, and vmware executes as expected.

Same here.
Comment 3 Kenton Groombridge 2013-03-10 15:13:19 UTC
Installing vmware-workstation-9.0.2.1031769 made no difference. Backing down to the most recent 8.X version "vmware-workstation-8.0.5.893925", and all is well.
Comment 4 Kenton Groombridge 2013-03-11 17:49:52 UTC
Found a solution:

See:

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33779?project=1&order=dateopened&sort=desc

Backing down to net-misc/curl-7.28.1 and vmware-workstation-9.X is running on my system.
Comment 5 Kenton Groombridge 2013-03-11 18:33:13 UTC
Sorry for multiple posting, but wanted to ensure I could recreate the problem so I went back to net-misc/curl-7.29.0-r1 and vmware-workstation-9.0.2.1031769 is running without problems.

I am dumbfounded as I don't know what "magically" happened. The only thing I changed was downgrading curl and going back to the most recent version as of the day of this post.

I rebooted just to be sure that I am using net-misc/curl-7.29.0-r1.

I hate it when it does this.

Well... unfortunately there's no setting RESOLVED ABSOLUTELYNOCLUE, so NEEDINFO will have to suffice. If you encounter problems again, feel free to re-open or better open a new bug.
