When system is idle, a background whine/whistle/interference can be heard in the background through the Line-Out of the motherboard's sound ouputs. It disappears when system is active (when the user is interacting with the system). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot Gentoo, login and leave the system idle. 2. emerge athcool 3. Check CPU disconnect with athcool stat 4. If CPU disconnect is on, whine will be heard in the background 5 if CPU disconnect is off, output is completely silent Actual Results: athcool on : background whine can be heard athcool off: background whine disappears. Expected Results: Output from Line-Out should be completely silent, unless a program is actually producing sound. Also, support for CPU-disconnect is nice, since it brings down the CPU temperature by about 5-10

Tested with Windows XP, and the problem is also present. Therefore, it seems it's a motherboard/chipset/BIOS problem, and has nothing to do with Gentoo.
Not a Gentoo bug.
