Description Oleg Gawriloff 2012-11-22 12:00:56 UTC
At all my system (20+ servers) fcron ends up with following:
gawriloff@falcon-cl2 ~ $ ps ugaxww | grep defunct
root     22587  0.0  0.0      0     0 ?        Zs   14:46   0:00 [sh] <defunct>

Those defunct process in fact system run-crons from cronbase (as suggested in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/cron-guide.xml#doc_chap4):
gawriloff@falcon-cl2 ~ $ sudo cat /var/log/messages | grep 22587
Nov 22 14:46:17 falcon-cl2 fcron[22586]: Job /usr/bin/test -x /usr/sbin/run-crons &&  /usr/sbin/run-crons started for user root (pid 22587)

And in fact there is two fcron process:
gawriloff@falcon-cl2 ~ $ ps ugaxww | grep fcron
root     22586  0.0  0.0  48596  1572 ?        S    14:46   0:00 /usr/sbin/fcron -c /etc/fcron/fcron.conf
root     24590  0.0  0.0  10716   508 ?        Ss   Oct01   1:17 /usr/sbin/fcron -c /etc/fcron/fcron.conf

One is master and second one is spawned to run the job:
gawriloff@falcon-cl2 ~ $ sudo cat /var/log/messages | grep 22586
Nov 22 14:46:17 falcon-cl2 fcron[22586]: pam_unix(fcron:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)
Nov 22 14:46:17 falcon-cl2 fcron[22586]: Job /usr/bin/test -x /usr/sbin/run-crons &&  /usr/sbin/run-crons started for user root (pid 22587)

It seems is something wrong either with fcron itself or with run-crons.
Any ideas?

Reproducible: Always

It appears that the same problem is filled a year ago in https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388371

According to log I see same defunct run-crons processes
