Description Joakim 2012-11-21 21:21:28 UTC
I first compiled glibc-2.16.0 with gcc-4.4.7 w/o problems and then went on to compile gcc again which failed to compile. Indeed it's not possible to compile glibc-2.16.0 again as well.

I will attach build log separately.

# emerge -pqv '=sys-devel/gcc-4.4.7'
[ebuild R ] sys-devel/gcc-4.4.7 USE="cxx fortran mudflap (multilib) nls nptl openmp (-altivec) -bootstrap -build -doc (-fixed-point) -gcj -graphite -gtk (-hardened) (-libssp) -multislot -nocxx -nopie -nossp -objc -objc++ -objc-gc {-test} -vanilla"

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. with gcc-4.4.7 active, emerge glibc-2.16.0
2. emerge again gcc
3.
Actual Results:
* ERROR: sys-devel/gcc-4.4.7 failed (compile phase):
 *   emake failed with bootstrap-lean
 *
 * Call stack:
 *     ebuild.sh, line   93:  Called src_compile
 *   environment, line 4054:  Called toolchain_src_compile
 *   environment, line 4707:  Called gcc_do_make
 * environment, line 2366: Called die
 * The specific snippet of code:
 *       emake LDFLAGS="${LDFLAGS}" STAGE1_CFLAGS="${STAGE1_CFLAGS}" LIBPATH="${LIBPATH}" BOOT_CFLAGS="${BOOT_CFLAGS}" ${GCC_MAKE_TARGET} || die "emake failed with ${GCC_MAKE_TARGET}";

Expected Results:
It should compile

And just adding to the obvious, I have already tried adding "-mno-avx" to my CFLAGS so I don't think this a dupe of #357287

correct build log, got it wrong before.
Comment 5 Ben Longbons 2012-11-23 05:02:47 UTC
I encountered this during the rebuild for the removal of the "nocxx" USE flag.

As well as 4.4.7, this also affects gcc 4.3.6:

/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.3.6-r1/work/gcc-4.3.6/libgcc/../gcc/config/i386/linux-unwind.h: In function 'x86_fallback_frame_state':
/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.3.6-r1/work/gcc-4.3.6/libgcc/../gcc/config/i386/linux-unwind.h:142: error: field 'info' has incomplete type

but gcc 4.5.4, 4.6.3, and 4.7.2 rebuilt fine.

My system gcc is 4.6.3 and I do not have any problems rebuilding glibc-2.16
Comment 6 Joakim 2012-11-23 07:49:24 UTC
Maybe this bug is less important now or even obsolete, at least to me, because I kept 4.4.7 only for the sake of openvz-sources which ran in to kernel panic when compiled with a later version. However, since opening this bug I have upgraded to the latest openvz-sources-2.6.32.62.2 and compiled it to boot successfully with gcc-4.6.3, so my need for this bug to solve has sort of vanished.

It may still needs to be solved in case there are other ebuilds having problem with later gcc, otherwise unless the build.log show something obvious, I would vote to close this bug as obsolete as there is a better version of gcc available and stable.

By the way, I was later as well able to compile glibc-2.16.0 with gcc-4.4.7, initially it failed but another try yesterday succeeded and I never checked that error so closely so could possibly have been something else. It was though unmasking glibc-2.16.0 that lead to the gcc-4.4.7 failure, after glibc had been upgraded and compiled with it.

I will keep my gcc-4.4.7 until this bug is closed, in case needed. I also have 4.5.4 as a backup so doesn't really need 4.4.7 any longer.
