I had my portage mirror fail on me temporarily, thus emerge resorted to the upstream SRC_URI to fetch the udev-171 tarball from "http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev-171.tar.bz2". However, the file is no longer on the server, which leads to a 404 Not Found error. I am not sure wether this is really a bug in the ebuild (the fallback upstream-URI is no longer valid), or if the mirror is to blame for being down / not providing the necessary distfiles according to its ebuilds. The actual question would be wether portage relies on the availability of a mirror only for synching the tree or also during build time, of which i would expect the former. The workaround is of course to use a working mirror, but as stated above, i would not expect portage to rely on a working mirror during build time. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. synch tree with working mirror 2. have mirror go down temporarily 3. emerge udev-171-r8 Actual Results: >>> Downloading 'http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev-171.tar.bz2' --2012-10-31 11:36:09-- http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev-171.tar.bz2 Resolving www.kernel.org... 149.20.20.133, 149.20.4.69 Connecting to www.kernel.org|149.20.20.133|:80... connected. This isn't really a bug at all, well, maybe a bug in the mirror you were using. Use more mirrors or don't set mirror at all in make.conf and then it will resort to working one. But I've made an exception with 171-r8: 01 Nov 2012; Samuli Suominen <ssuominen@gentoo.org> udev-171-r8.ebuild: Update HOMEPAGE and SRC_URI from latest stable wrt #440408 But please don't file "bugs" like these more, if you need help setting up your make.conf, use http://forums.gentoo.org/
I tried to state clearly that I'm not sure it's a bug in portage, the question being wether portage relies on a working gentoo mirror during package _build time_ (not only for syncing the tree). Since this seems to be the case (which I would have expected otherwise), this renders this "bug" report invalid, of course. Thanks for bothering!
