Oracle has provided RPM's for their InstantClient product, which is a minimal install of only the client-specific libraries. I have created three ebuilds for installing these in Gentoo. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Created attachment 26906 [details] InstantClient Basic package Just put it under the dev-db category in portage, create the digest, and install it.
Created attachment 26907 [details] InstantClient JDBC package Put it under dev-db/instantclient-jdbc, build the digest, and install the package.
Created attachment 26908 [details] InstantClient SQL*Plus package Just put it in dev-db/instantclient-sqlplus, create the digest, and install the package.
robin, I think you'd mentioned interest in oracle and gentoo on one of the ml's no?
as much as i'd like to take care of these, i don't have the resources to test them out properly at the moment, or the time to take care of them. having a developer that seriously does oracle stuff would be a great help, to take properly care of these. bouncing back to bug-wranglers for now.
I haven't looked to deeply, but I assume this might have to be one of those restricted fetch things like sun-jdk so the user can click through the license agreements and what not. Good to see this though.
Ah I see you've taken care of it all. Fantastic.

Thoughts against naming these ebuilds oracle-instantclient-*, instead of just instantclient-*? I'm testing now.
Good idea. Guess I wasn't thinking as clearly when I created them. :)
I added the OTN license to the portage tree. It's same basic license as existing oracle-jdbc, and so the jdbc packages should use OTN. I'll talk to them later. These three packages (with oracle- prefixes) have been added to portage and masked in packages.mask. Unmask in your /etc/portage/packages.unmask and test away. Report back here and I'll open it up. FWIW the sqlplus client worked like a champ for me.
Anyone have any results to report? I'm going to assume success at the end of the day and unmask otherwise.
Hm seems to work at least for my local setup. Havn't tested in any production environment. But I'm sure, I you unmask it, and there is a problem, the problem will reported.
Unmasked. Thanks again. Any problems should be reported as new bugs.
