I just upgraded GCC (I'm currently using sys-devel/gcc-4.7.2). your system shouldn't be linking everything against libgcc_s.so since you're on x86_64. i'm guessing it's related to -flto though.

Turns out that app-shells/bash was the only thing linked against libgcc_s.so. So I: * disabled LTO for app-shells/bash * emerged app-shells/bash * deleted /lib64/libgcc_s.so.1 * re-enabled LTO for app-shells/bash * emerged app-shells/bash ldd indicates that bash is no longer linked to libgcc_s.so. So this is probably a problem with LTO. It's relatively easy to reproduce (simply emerge bash with LTO when libgcc_s.so exists). But I'm not sure what to do next - is there somewhere that I should report this issue so it gets addressed?
