The current stable version of alpine could not be compiled with USE="kerberos" on a system with binutils-2.22-r1, which is now stable for x86. Alpine compiled properly on the same system with binutils-2.21.1-r1 (also marked stable) and nothing else changed. It also compiled properly on the same system with binutils-2.22-r1 and USE="-kerberos".

Information from elsewhere on the web suggests that the linker might be optimizing out some of the libraries passed to it: [1] a Debian bug report for alpine from 2010, and [2] a link to a Debian page describing the particular optimization in question. I am unfamiliar with the subject, so I cannot comment more thoroughly on it, but if I have time I may work on an ebuild that compiles with kerberos support using the recommendations from [1].

checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

!!! Please attach the following file when seeking support:
!!! /var/tmp/portage/mail-client/alpine-2.00-r4/work/alpine-2.00/config.log

This is where the attached build logs shows failure. The error you posted in comment #0 is not in the attachment, but it does show a request to attach the config.log. Which will it be?

/var/tmp/portage/mail-client/alpine-2.00-r4/temp/build.log

My apologies. That 'build.log' was from a failed experiment and was not what I intended to post. I have uploaded the log showing the build error discussed in my bug report.
Comment 3 Kevin Wilson 2012-08-15 01:35:57 UTC
Additional information that may be helpful but that I have not provided, as suggested in 'build.log':

$ emerge -pqv =mail-client/alpine-2.00-r4
[ebuild R ] mail-client/alpine-2.00-r4 USE="chappa ipv6 kerberos nls passfile smime spell ssl threads -doc -ldap -onlyalpine -topal"
Comment 4 Juergen Rose 2012-10-08 07:54:24 UTC
I have the same error.
