Do you have KDE_HANDBOOK set in your environment somewhere? It should only be set in the ebuild.
No, but I have "handbook" in my global use flags, see "emerge --info" above
From your environment file: declare -x KDE_HANDBOOK="optional" We need to figure out where this is coming from, since it appears to be set in neither the ebuild nor the eclass.
OK, you were right. I found it in my /etc/make.conf. I am not sure how it got there though, I do have it only on my last x86 installation. I checked my backups and all of my backups this year have the settings, while older ones do not. When I delete this entry, the build succeeds.
