This was fixed in bug #402727. The fix however went into the newer versions >3.12.2-r1 and I did not have the time to backport it to the older versions.

I opened a stabilization request for hplip 3.12.4 in bug #414161 and Tomáš Chvátal (scarabeus@gentoo.org) already stabilized for amd64, x86 and ppc. So I will close this one for now
