Hi Alphat-PC, thank you for your hint. If the current revdep-rebuild (due to downgrading from libcurl.so.5.2.0 to libcurl.so.4.2.0) will finished, I will test it. But btw., why a gconfd compiled with the orbit flag does not work anymore since last thursday?

On an other systems I still have a gconfd compiled with the orbit flag. I just rebooted the system twice and started gdm and logged in without any problems. I have the same problem after rebuilding @world. "saved_state" files fill up and I'm not able to log into any account, even newly created ones.
... disabling the "orbit" useflag of gnome-base/gconf as suggested above helps.
1. If you built gconf with USE=orbit, you might have the buggy libbonobo-2.32.1 release installed. As a result, it has been masked some time ago, and downgrading to the latest unmasked version (2.24.3) may solve the problem. 2. Alternatively, try gconf with USE=-orbit.
In gconf-3.2.3-r1, USE=-orbit is now the default as a workaround to keep more people from hitting this issue. However, this bug should be kept open until we understand why the orbit IPC backend sometimes fails so spectacularly. >*gconf-3.2.3-r1 (11 Apr 2012) > > 11 Apr 2012; Alexandre Rostovtsev <tetromino@gentoo.org> > +gconf-3.2.3-r1.ebuild, +files/gconf-3.2.3-shutdown-crash.patch: > Have USE=-orbit by default to work around bug #411237 (enormously overgrown > ~/.gconfd/saved_state). Fix a crash when USE=-orbit.
@Alexandre Rostovtsev: I'm definitely using gnome-base/libbonobo-2.24.3
Alexandre already knows I've hit this bug, and it's frustrated me for almost a week now. I do plan on actually figuring out what's going on, but I should mention that I don't even have libbonobo installed.
I have the same issue on my stable system. But the stable Version gnome-base/gconf-2.32.4 does not have USE=orbit :( emerge -e world or test using new created user did not helped.

I had the same issue after upgrading dev-libs/glib-2.32.4 without upgrading dev-util/gdbus-codegen-2.32.4 . After I upgraded gdbus-codegen it stopped filling up my ~/.gconfd/ (although I still get segfaults from gconfd).
I hit what seems to be this bug on two amd64 systems that updated world last week, after several months without updates. I'm using gnome2 stable (2.32). The symptoms I see are that when trying to log in, ~/.gconfd/saved_state grows enormously and gconfd-2 eats cpu. Also, general protection errors like this: gconfd-2[28854] general protection ip:7f79c0d27531 sp:7fff12ee0ef8 error:0 in libc-2.14.1.so[7f79c0ca7000+184000] are seen in dmesg. .xsession-errors shows that most anything that is trying to talk to gconf times out. It turns out that I can make this problem go away if I replace /usr/lib64/libgconf.so-4.1.5 with the corresponding file from the gconf-2.32.4 package from tinderbox (installing the whole package from tinderbox is fine too, but this one file seems do to the trick). I've tried a number of things: I've downgraded glibc from 2.15-r1 to 2.14.1-r3, downgraded gcc from 4.5.3 to 4.4.6, installed binary gcc, libtool and binutils packages from tinderbox to recompile gconf, but no matter what I do, a gconf that I compile on my own now shows this problem. I see another thing that I imagine is related as it started at the same time: -when trying to build deskbar-applet, python crashes with the same kind of general protection fault during the configure stage. Is there anything else in the toolchain or the configuration of the toolchain that might be related?
Ok, this is obscure, but here is the answer: crossdev installs: /usr/share/crossdev/include/site/linux-gnu /usr/share/crossdev/include/site/linux-gnueabi each of which define: ac_cv_alignof_CORBA_pointer=4 but this is wrong, it needs to be 8 (on amd64 anyway). When orbit is built, it uses the cached value of 4, and puts that into /usr/include/orbit-2.0/orbit/orbit-config.h When gconf is built against this orbit-config, it shows the symptoms we've been seeing. So, the workaround for those who need it is: 1) change the 4 to an 8 in the two files mentioned above (or remove crossdev) then rebuild orbit and gconf 2) kill off any linger gconfd-2 processes 3) remove your ~/.gconfd/saved-state and all should be well. This would seem to be a bug in crossdev. Why are these in crossdev anyway?

Thanks for your investigation! I've added crossdev developers to the CC list. However, I cannot reproduce the issue with crossdev-20120721. In other words: crossdev-20120721 does have ac_cv_alignof_CORBA_pointer=4 in /usr/share/crossdev/include/site/linux-gnu*; but after installing crossdev-20120721 and re-emerging orbit-2.14.19-r1, I still have the correct amd64 definition #define ORBIT_ALIGNOF_CORBA_POINTER 8 in /usr/include/orbit-2.0/orbit/orbit-config.h What version of crossdev are you using? Could you please attach orbit's configure log and verbose build log? (In other words, please emerge orbit with MAKEOPTS="V=1" FEATURES="keepwork keeptemp", and attach /var/tmp/portage/gnome-base/orbit-2.14.19-r1/temp/build.log and /var/tmp/portage/gnome-base/orbit-2.14.19-r1/work/ORBit2-2.14.19/config.log)
You're right. With crossdev-20120721 this problem is gone. The configure script for orbit no longer pulls in those site scripts. But with crossdev-20120531 (stable), the problem is as I described. I was wondering why a non-cross-compile build was pulling in configuration supplied by crossdev...
