i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc: Internal error: Killed (program cc1)

That means you ran out of memory. Please investigate that (perhaps by consulting the OOM messages in the kernel log (dmesg).
Comment 4 Scott Marks 2012-03-20 00:17:59 UTC
You are right about that, at least in detail: there are two OOM messages in the dmesg log. What is unclear is why. Since my last attempt, I doubled the main memory to 1GB and increased the swap file to slightly less than 2GB, and the net effect was to get two OOM messages instead of one, although with -j2 that might be just Heisenberg.

I will attach the output of /proc/meminfo as meminfo.before and meminfo.after, and the result of dmesg > dmesg.log as well as the current build.log, ebuild environment file. To keep the comment short, I will also attach emerge.info from emerge --info =app-emulation/qemu-0.11.1 > emerge.info rather than clutter up this comment with it.

output of dmesg

As expected, the OOM messages are at the end.
Comment 10 Scott Marks 2012-03-20 07:17:57 UTC
Turns out that the problem seems to be with the sparc emulations:

  USE="-qemu_user_targets_sparc32plus -qemu_user_targets_sparc64" emerge qemu

worked.
