I got to phase 5 when I received this error message. I successfully mounted the directories and began to untar the stage3 image when it stopped at this error message. It finished processing the ./root/, ./root/.keep, ./root/.ccache/ and then it puked. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Followed all of the instructions up to stage 5 for x86 LiveCD install. 2. 3. Expected Results: Continued to untar the stage3 image.
What version of the stage did you choose - was it a stable 1.4 stage or an experimental stage? If it was an experimental stage, what's the datestamp of it ?
Have you tried to continue the install?
The next command I ran was "df" to see if the error may have been generated due to the HD being full. The install froze at that point and I had to reboot. At this time, I started over with the same result. I did not attempt to continue the install. This is where I downloaded the images: http://www.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo/releases/x86/1.4/livecd/x86/ The image files that I have are the exact same that are still posted on the site above.
I may have found my problem in this bug posting: Bugzilla Bug 10295 I'll try to wipe the disk and repartition with FDISK again and let you know what happens.
those 1.4 stages are deprecated, please use the 2004.0 stages.
I have the same problem but with stage 2004.0 and 2004.1. They were stage3 tarballs for Athlon XP. It happens when i untar it and my partitions are not in a big block. Here is the log : tar: ./usr/share/terminfo/v/vt100-am: Cannot hard link to `./etc/terminfo/v/vt100': No such file or directory tar: ./usr/share/terminfo/v/vt200: Cannot hard link to `./etc/terminfo/v/vt220': No such file or directory tar: ./usr/share/terminfo/s/sun1: Cannot hard link to `./etc/terminfo/s/sun': No such file or directory tar: ./usr/share/terminfo/s/sun2: Cannot hard link to `./etc/terminfo/s/sun': No such file or directory tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors here is the layout of my disks : /boot /dev/hda1 swap /dev/hda2 / /dev/hda4 /usr /dev/lvm/usr /var /dev/lvm/var /home ... /opt ... /tmp ... I use lvm2 by the way. Could you reopen the bug please ?

Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux". I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers, this is the only reasonable way to do this.
