Since I upgraded to 2.6.1-gentoo kernel my system became very unstable. While working on my KDE-desktop, all windows suddenly stop responding, but the mouse is still moving. In most cases it is possible to switch to a framebuffer console, but I cannot use the top command or kill an application or shut the System down When I try to kill the X-server, the whole System freezes when trying to reload the X-server. After the last crash I found the following lines in my log: Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000003f Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac printing eip: Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac e29ef01c Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac *pde = 00000000 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac Oops: 0000 [#1] Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac CPU: 0 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac EIP: 0060:[<e29ef01c>] Tainted: G S Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac EFLAGS: 00210286 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac EIP is at mga_vm_shm_close+0x77/0x1d8 [mga] Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac eax: 00000004 ebx: da994c40 ecx: d7991ca0 edx: 00000003 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac esi: 00000003 edi: d7991fc0 ebp: df1b4c00 esp: c217dbfc Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac ds: 007b es: 007b ss: 0068 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac Process kdeinit (pid: 5079, threadinfo=c217c000 task=d6681310) Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac Stack: c7ca22a0 0000000c 00000006 c014eda5 df14e020 df14e000 d0d34500 d0d34540 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac e29eefa5 ddad3000 c0150b7d d0d34500 d0d344c0 00000000 00000000 ffffffff Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac c217dc44 c150b080 000006fd d84f0080 d84f0080 d6681310 c0120d3d d84f0080 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac Call Trace: Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c014eda5>] remove_shared_vm_struct+0x41/0x99 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<e29eefa5>] mga_vm_shm_close+0x0/0x1d8 [mga] Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c0150b7d>] exit_mmap+0x1d5/0x230 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c0120d3d>] mmput+0x72/0xc2 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c01685a7>] exec_mmap+0x121/0x20d Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c0168819>] flush_old_exec+0x186/0xa40 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c0168477>] kernel_read+0x50/0x5f Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c0189aff>] load_elf_binary+0x314/0xc75 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c011b5f1>] pgd_alloc+0x18/0x1c Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c01897eb>] load_elf_binary+0x0/0xc75 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c0169477>] search_binary_handler+0xfb/0x333 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c016993b>] do_execve+0x28c/0x2a7 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c0107c51>] sys_execve+0x50/0x80 Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac [<c01095c7>] syscall_call+0x7/0xb Jan 30 16:55:21 Dirac Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: Portage 2.0.49-r20 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.2.3, glibc-2.3.2-r9, 2.6.1-gentoo) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.1-gentoo i686 AMD Athlon(tm) processor Gentoo Base System version 1.4.3.10p1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=athlon-tbird -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -mmmx -m3dnow" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon-tbird -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -mmmx -m3dnow" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://linux.rz.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/gentoo-mirror/ ftp://ftp.tu-clausthal.de/pub/linux/gentoo/ http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.de.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="3dnow X alsa apm arts avi berkdb bonobo cdr crypt cups dga directfb encode esd evo fbcon foomaticdb gb gd gdbm ggi gif gtk gtk2 gtkhtml imlib java jikes jpeg kde kerberos lcms libg++ libwww mad matrox mga mikmod mmx motif mozilla mpeg nas ncurses nls oggvorbis opengl oss pda pdflib perl png ppds python qt qtmt quicktime readline scanner sdl slang spell ssl svga tcltk tcpd tetex tiff truetype usb x86 xface xml2 xmms xv zlib video_cards_matrox" My kernelconfig: http://www-nw.uni-regensburg.de/~.mum01533.3.stud.uni-regensburg.de/config.txt
Can you try it without framebuffer and bootsplash (if you use bootsplash) and check again?
Since I updated to a later release, the bug didn't happen again.
Good to hear. Bug is gone.
Bug fixed.
