Odd, I've been watching Gentoo Linux bugs for this issue but haven't seen it pop up.

@mozilla team, any ideas? 9.0.1 fails the same way (after renaming the ebuild and excluding the 5009_revert_bug_708572.patch patch)

9.0 is 9.0.1, I would be interested in seeing the autoconf.out.

err strike that I overlooked it in first post, appears to be autoconf is not supporting -I on prefix, the question remains as to why tho.
Comment 5 Jeremy Olexa (darkside) (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2012-01-12 17:18:32 UTC
It is autoconf-2.13's fault.

% autoconf-2.13 -I
Usage: autoconf [-h] [--help] [-m dir] [--macrodir=dir]
       [-l dir] [--localdir=dir] [--version] [template-file]

(Not Gentoo Prefix specific though, above command fails on Gentoo Linux too)
Comment 6 Steven Trogdon 2012-01-12 17:34:21 UTC
Well, I was able to get firefox-9.0 to build on Gentoo Linux in spite of autoconf-2.13
Comment 7 Massimo Burcheri 2012-01-13 08:06:38 UTC
Maybe this could be interesting:

$ eix -Ice sys-devel/autoconf
[I] sys-devel/autoconf (2.13(2.1)@11/21/11 2.68(2.5)@01/02/12): Used to create autoconfiguration files

2.1 and 2.5 are installed in slots.

$ type -pa autoconf
/home/mburcher/gentoo/usr/bin/autoconf
/usr/bin/autoconf

$ ls -al $(type -p autoconf)
lrwxrwxrwx 1 mburcher os_int 25 Jan  2 13:23 /home/mburcher/gentoo/usr/bin/autoconf -> ../lib/misc/ac-wrapper.sh

Maybe the wrapper does something else if Jeremy (darkside) expects 2.13 here:

$ autoconf --version |grep autoconf
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.68

Actually the script does what old shaken Mandrake created it for:

$ grep defaults $(type -p autoconf)
# - defaults to newest version available (hopefully autoconf-2.60)

> Maybe this could be interesting:

Sorry, that isn't interesting. The wrapper just calls autoconf-2.13 IF WANT_AUTOCONF=2.1 is in the env. As you can guess, that variable is set in the ebuild.

Try it out for yourself:
% WANT_AUTOCONF=2.1 autoconf --version
Autoconf version 2.13

I last build firefox-8.0 on 11:09:31 AM 12/05/2011 and now it fails too with the same error. hmm, what changed here?

You're right. I never thought to do that! I wonder if it is the autotools eclass. The timestamp I have on it is 12/15.

Nice hint. I have confirmed that locally rolling back the autotools.eclass solves this. Now I will try to bisect it to find the hunk that cuases issues.

Sorry mozilla team for bugging you ;)

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-907778.html describes a workaround, dropping --at-m4flags
Comment 13 Steven Trogdon 2012-01-18 15:46:30 UTC
A little experimenting here reveals that if I insert

unset AT_SYS_M4DIR

before eautoreconf in the src_prepare() of the ebuild(s) then the issue is resolved. I suppose the variable may be needed to insure that in prefix the host aclocal stuff isn't used. But is it's use broken in prefix? Or is there something more subtle going on?
Comment 14 Jeremy Olexa (darkside) (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2012-01-18 20:21:46 UTC
autoconf stuff I don't understand.

grobian, can you sync autoutils.eclass then I will try again. Pending failure, I'll get vapier involved.
Comment 15 Fabian Groffen gentoo-dev 2012-01-19 08:00:13 UTC
vapier changed the way the -I arguments are passed to aclocal. He disliked the original approach in Prefix, and instead did it through a variable. We set that variable in the Prefix' profiles, see profiles/prefix/profile.bashrc.

I think the Profile might be sourced multiple times, hence the repetitive equal -I flags in the aclocal call. I think we should write some conditional to make it idempotent in some way.

Quick fix here:
This whole -I stuff is there because of cross-prefix installs. Now in latest Portages this is definitely broken, so the append is currently not necessary. Unfortunately from the profiles we cannot detect that we're in cross-prefix (secret BPREFIX is gone) so we can't conditionalise on that. However, we could just comment it out for now, for as long as cross-prefix doesn't work anyway.
That would not resolve this bug, but likely postpone the need for fixing it for a (long) while.

Ok then. I'm interested in moving on and not stalling because of hypothetical feature.

+  20 Jan 2012; Jeremy Olexa <darkside@gentoo.org> profile.bashrc:
+ comment out the AT_SYS_M4DIR stuff because it breaks packages (bug 397563)
