Because the installation of dev-lang/ruby-1.8.7_p357 fails the installation of texlive-xetex fails too. I don't understand, why ruby packages are installed dependent on texlive-xetex installation. I can't find neither a dependency in /usr/portage/dev-texlive/texlive-xetex/texlive-xetex-2011.ebuild nor I have set any ruby USE flags: root@wildcat:/root(52)# grep -i ruby /usr/portage/dev-texlive/texlive-xetex/texlive-xetex-2011.ebuild root@wildcat:/root(53)# grep -i ruby /etc/portage/package.use root@wildcat:/root(54)# grep -i ruby /etc/make.conf Any hint is appreciated. Almost the same happens if I add the doc USE flag to /etc/make.conf.

You are using --newuse which wants to recompile dev-ruby/racc which you already have installed.

I should look properly before shooting from the hip :-) texlive-pictures has a dependency on dev-lang/ruby, and that pulls in all the other stuff.
Er, is this a dependency calculation problem? It certainly looks like more needs to be unmasked - not like there is anything actually wrong.
With the new version of glibc (glibc-2.14.1-r2) the problem emerging texlive-xetex disapeared, because 'emerge =ruby-1.8.7_p357' works now. But on the other hand I find it suboptimal, that such basic stuff like texlive-xetex needs ruby including all of its dependencies.
