Description Fabio Coatti 2011-11-29 14:59:11 UTC
Hi All,
I've some troubles with networkmanager, I guess some bug/miscofiguration, but given that happened after an upgrade maybe is worth to discuss here.
since I upgraded from networkmanager 0.8.X, now I'm unable to set up a configuration for wired networks with a name given by me. nm always places System (ethX) as a name, regardless of what I palce in connection mane field. This happens oth with nm-connection-editor and kde plasma applet. I'm still looking because I have other issues as well, so maybe this is only a symptom of something else (policies?).
KDE 4.7.3,
wpa_supplicant 0.8

please let me know if you need any other detail, any help in understanding if this is a bug or what else will be appreciated.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 poncho 2011-11-30 13:32:58 UTC
I had the same issue.

Setting "managed=false" in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf fixed it.

My nm-system-settings.conf looks like this:

[main]
plugins=ifnet,keyfile

[ifnet]
managed=false
auto_refresh=false
Comment 2 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-12-04 03:56:25 UTC
So this isn't an actual bug but a run time configuration choice/failure?
Comment 3 Mu Qiao (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-12-14 01:33:43 UTC
This is controlled by ifnet plug-in. It maintains your network configuration in Gentoo's /etc/conf.d/net and wpa_supplicant.conf. If you need to change the name, please don't make the connection system-wide or disable the plug-in as others suggested.
Comment 4 Mu Qiao (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-12-14 06:38:40 UTC
After checking out NM-0.9.2.0, I think this is a valid bug. All the connections in NM-0.9.2.0 are system connections but ifnet should not manage connections that are not "available to all users".

I'll fix this issues but for now, you have to disable the plug-in as poncho suggested.
Comment 5 jannis 2012-01-04 09:43:16 UTC
Same problem here. IMO, NetworkManager should not touch "my" /etc/conf.d/net at all but keep its stuff to itself :/ ....
Comment 6 Mu Qiao (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-01-05 02:01:30 UTC
Fixed in networkmanager-0.9.2.0-r2.

PS:
If you check "available to all users", the connection will become a system connection and ifnet plug-in will handle it. Then you can't change the connection name and the connection settings will be written to /etc/conf.d/net.
So if you do not want these, please do not check that checkbox and the connection will become a user connection.
