ebuild

There doesn't seem to be a canonical location for this package anymore, but this seems to be the most up-to-date version.
Comment 1 Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2011-12-02 21:15:21 UTC
I've updated the HOMEPAGE variable in the ebuild. However, the upstream situation is not quite clear to me: The git repo has been copied to a new location on github, but there are no further commits, i.e. it is identical with the version that we have as browse-kill-ring-1.3. Also there is no statement if maintainership has been passed on, or if this is a fork.

Therefore, for the moment I'd rather not add a live ebuild for this package.

To add a more general remark, snapshots are much preferred over live ebuilds, because the latter have issues with availability (sources cannot be mirrored) and security (no checksum in Manifest). See also <http://devmanual.gentoo.org/ebuild-writing/functions/src_unpack/cvs-sources/>.

According to https://github.com/todesschaf/browse-kill-ring/commit/9ae9dd18ee9e5a3985ca55dec30a72c86a90e033 and http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/BrowseKillRing Nick Hurley (toedesschaf) has abandoned browse-kill-ring.

Debian's emacs-goodies.el includes version 1.3a (see http://alioth.debian.org/scm/viewvc.php/emacs-goodies-el/elisp/emacs-goodies-el/browse-kill-ring.el?hideattic=0&view=markup&revision=1.3&root=pkg-goodies-el ) which is also the first commit at https://github.com/T-J-Teru/browse-kill-ring (0ecdcc1c19d49550a598ae5cb4776061594b8305). That repo also has two more commits look like bug fixes by the same author (version 1.3c).

There also appears to be different bug fix in debian at http://alioth.debian.org/scm/viewvc.php/emacs-goodies-el/debian/patches/50_browse-kill-ring_bug224751.diff?hideattic=0&view=markup&revision=1.1&root=pkg-goodies-el
Comment 3 Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2011-12-04 20:01:10 UTC
You are right of course. Seems I was too tired two days ago and had looked into the "todesschaf" repo at github, instead of "T-J-Teru".

I shall bump the package to version 1.3c soon.

I'm reluctant to add random patches from other distros, unless the issue is seen by Gentoo users too. Debian maintainers should submit that patch upstream, and upstream should decide if it is accepted.

app-emacs/browse-kill-ring-1.3c committed to CVS.
Thanks for bringing this up.
