/usr/portage/media-libs/fontconfig/fontconfig-2.2.1.ebuild has two garbage
characters at the end refers to:

epatch ${PPREFIX}-2.2-rove_subpixel_test.patch

which should be

epatch ${PPREFIX}-2.2-remove_subpixel_test.patch

I should have mentioned - fontconfig builds cleanly after fixing the
ebuild file.
