Description xiando 2011-08-29 20:34:11 UTC
aufs+squashfs /usr and /opt is nice.

Reproducible: Didn't try

I would like aufs to be included in gentoo-sources kernel, but I do understand the many valid reasons not to do it.

I don't think it's very likely that AUFS is going to be added to genpatches/gentoo-kernel.

However, you can just add the patches needed for AUFS in /etc/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources, and they'll be applied automatically to your kernel (so that you don't have to manually re-apply them every time you upgrade your kernel).

Thanks.

I fully understand why aufs will probably not be added. I would like the bug to stay as a lowest priority feature request if possible regardless if that is alright.

Thank you for the automatic kernel patching tip, it worked to the extent that the patch files were applied automatically. This does not fully do the trick, aufs also requires that several files in fs/aufs/ and include/linux/aufs_type.h are copied (and Documentation/ if you want the secret documents). Placing these files in /etc/portage/patches/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources did not copy these files, so manually updating is still required. But thank you anyway, the automatic .patch applying helps and perhaps it would be possible to also copy files there in the future (if there is not a trick I do not know about already).

I will move this to maintainer-wanted if someone is interested in maintaining a aufs patched kernel.

Mike, should we create an auf-sources package if we did provide auf patch?

I will take care of this.

Please take a look into the betagarden overlay.

Awesome, thanks!
What are the keys and instructions to enable it while emerging an update?
Comment 11 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-11-26 21:23:36 UTC
Nothing special.
The package contains gentoo-sources + aufs3 in one package. So just emerge, run make oldconfig and be fine.
