The current version of media-video/lives is 1.4.5.
Simply version bumping the media-video/lives-1.4.2 ebuild works on x86.

Furthermore, >=media-video/lives-1.4.4 fixes a build issue which prevented version 1.4.2 to compile properly.

Excuse the inconvenience. While version 1.4.5 builds properly it relies on libweed_slice.so.0 at runtime. media-video/lives-1.4.4 compiles properly and runs out of the box by just version bumping the ebuild.
