Platform is SUSE Enterprise 10 SP2.

Bootstrapping fails at this step,

./bootstrap-prefix.sh $EPREFIX portage

with the console message

checking for id... /local/tmp/b/tmp/usr/bin/id
checking whether /local/tmp/b/tmp/usr/bin/id is good enough... yes
checking for python... /local/tmp/b/tmp/usr/bin/python
checking whether /local/tmp/b/tmp/usr/bin/python 2.6.4 >= 2.7... configure: error: need at least version 2.7 of python
