Description Sven Vermeulen 2011-07-17 18:51:09 UTC
When running newrole to switch roles, the new shell does not behave as a login shell. /etc/profile nor ~/.bashrc are sourced, which can be seen as an annoyance.
However, it is intended to start as a login shell. The shell's argv[0] is prepended with a hyphen. Previous policycoreutils (2.0.82-r2 and before) no not exhibit this behavior (it is new since policycoreutils-2.0.85).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
swift@testsys ~$ newrole -r sysadm_r
bash-4.1$ ps -ef | grep $$
swift 21785 21783 0 20:47 tty2 00:00:00 -/bin/bash
Actual Results:
Shell does not behave as login shell.

Expected Results:
Shell should behave as login shell.

Downgrading just policycoreutils is sufficient to "fix" the problem (and thus seemingly isolate the issue to policycoreutils). Within newrole.c, the only change(s) seen relate to the use of libcap-ng (new capabilities functionality) though.

Current policycoreutils: 2.0.85

This has been tracked back to being setuid, changing permissions to 0755 will resolve the problem by moving it back to file capatibility which will ensure that a login shell is spawned for non-root users.

Great work in debugging this! Thanks a lot

policycoreutils-2.1.0-r2 now in hardened-dev overlay

This one should build without setuid.
