tor daemon cannot be started when 0.2.3.1_alpha-r1 is installed. tor daemon works fine when 0.2.2.29_beta is installed. Both versions use the same configuration, I am using the default configuration for the combination of privoxy and tor. No log file is written. do you see any other output with verbose mode?
Please post your torrc (obfuscate any sensitive data). Then run with Log debug and post the logs.
It seems that I cannot reproduce the problem any more. I did a lot of updating and reboot at the weekend. It seems that 0.2.3.1_alpha-r1 is working. Sorry for having the bug report entered prematurely.
