I have compiled blender against the current ffmpeg (media-video/ffmpeg-0.7.1) using a makeshift version bump to the current version 2.58a.

Note that since ffmpeg-0.7.6 is now stable, the "stable" tree is affected by this as well.
Tested patch on amd64. Working flawlessly so far. It would make sense to just roll a 2.58a official ebuild (or just jump onto 2.59/2.60) in order to close the bug.
I agree. 1.) Either just release a 2.57-r2 so user can run revdep-rebuild without a failing Blender? 2.) Bump the version to 2.59 and get rid of the bug that way. Since the bug has been around since early July it would be really nice to get it sorted. The patch is here, so I guess releasing it as ~amd64 wouldn't be a huge endeavor?

I couldn't get the Honza patch to work. After merging it in, it still built blender 2.57-r1 and didn't upgrade to any newer version. Are there additional files that I need, in order to use the patch? Perhaps it wasn't merged right. If anybody has a working ebuild file that will produce a version of Blender that is newer than 2.57, please attach it. Thank you! For now, I'm doing the workaround of disabling ffmpeg, in package.use: media-gfx/blender -ffmpeg
I updated the patch supporting libav-0.7 api.
The stable blender versions are still broken.
Blender 2.60a works with ffmpeg.
the .49 should be fixed as well.
