When compiling dev-lang/tk with USE=truetype and x11-libs/libXft-2.2.0 installed, the configure script fails to detect libXft and the feature is not enabled. Tk is successfully installed, but everything has ugly fonts. Excerpt of the configure output: checking whether to use xft... yes checking for X11/Xft/Xft.h... yes checking for FT_New_Face in -lXft... no configure: WARNING: Can't find xft configuration, or xft is unusable If libXft is downgraded to 2.1.14, tk can be built with proper font support. Furthermore, if libXft is subsequently upgraded to 2.2.0, tk works just fine and the fonts are fine, too. (hence why this issue went unnoticed until today -- the last time I compiled tk was in 2009). Created attachment 258768 [details] Full build log. Whoops, I meant to attach the log from the latest stable but instead attached from the previous stable version (the failure is the same). Here's the right one.
That failure is caused by a silly configure check - checking for FT_New_Face in -lXft is plain wrong, as that function comes from libfreetype. Upstream does that check to detect freetype support in libXft, but on any '--as-needed' system such check will fail.
It is fixed in 8.5.9-r1 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 347569 ***
