Description Matt Turner gentoo-dev 2010-12-13 20:49:27 UTC
Our installers are shot.

The SGI boot CD doesn't work, since the kernel is too old.

SGI Netboot images don't work since the kernel is too old.

Loongson Netboot image is old and didn't boot on my Yeeloong.

Can't find a Loongson USB boot image.

Can't find a Cobalt Netboot image.

I just noticed this comment. Look in the mirrors under:

    experimental/mips/desktop-loongson2f

and you'll see my netboot-yeeloong.img image. I'm updating it soon, within a day or two, and will be switching from deprecated ATA/ATAPI to to the more modern SATA/PATA.

Pushed along with the desktop tarballs for the yeeloong.

Is this bug still valid?

In what sense. The problem with the bug is that its open ended. There is boot media for the yeeloong as I noted above, but Matt points out that the SGI CD doesn't work.

Soo.....

The bug states a fact, but really doesn't state a resolution. Do we want to construct this boot media and maintain it for all mips devices? I would say no. But for some targetted boards/netbooks, yes we do.

I released updated install Netboot images back in March 2020, which is, well, newer than the previous netboots that were fairly antiquated. I have a process that works now for creating new netboots, though my most recent attempt at the end of 2021 ran into too many issues with IP32 systems (SGI O2) on 5.4.x LTS kernels (hard lock when touching the disk). Given I also have issues with IP27 (hard lock), I didn't want to release netboots for just IP30 (SGI Octane), so I am resetting for later this year to maybe get 5.10.x LTS kernels working and giving the three SGI platforms another go, as there were some massive code overhauls for SGI systems between 5.4 and 5.10.

As far as the boot CD goes, that is a long way off, if ever. Getting working netboots again is partway there, but I hand-build those images, and if I ever did a boot CD again, that, too, would be hand-rolled, because trying to finagle catalyst would just be too much effort.
