Description James Bowlin 2010-12-13 03:05:09 UTC
On start up, xbmc-9999 waits about one minute to hear from devicekit-power if device-kit power is not installed. This is very annoying.

Reproducible: Always

If we add sys-apps/devicekit-power as a dependency to xbmc-9999 then people won't have to scramble around figuring out what the problem is. The only catch is that the consolekit service has to be restarted after devicekit-power is installed to make xbmc-9999 happy. Still, adding devicekit-power as a dependency should make things easier for people. Perhaps add a message in the devicekit-power ebuild that tells the user to restart the consolekit service.

you need to post `emerge --info` with your bug reports. presumably this only occurs with USE=hal. a hardcoded dep on any kit package is highly undesirable.
Comment 2 James Bowlin 2010-12-13 17:30:28 UTC
Yes, I have the hal USE flag set. I believe the "hard coded dependency" is built into XBMC but if you can find a compile time (or run time) option to turn off the one-minute wait for devicekit-power, I'd be delighted to be wrong. ISTM there are four possible combinations of having either hal installed and/or having devicekit-power installed. IMO anyone who installs xmbc-9999 will want to have devicekit-power installed to avoid the one-minute startup delay regardless of whether they have hal installed or not. I suppose the other possibility is to just give the user a big fat warning at the end of the xbmc-9999 install (if they don't already have devicekit-power installed) warning of the delay and telling them to install devicekit-power to get rid of it.

Here is the thread on the xbmc forums that clued me in to the idea that installing devicekit-power might solve my one-minute delay issue:

Here is my emerge --info:

Comment 3 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2010-12-22 18:18:30 UTC
sys-apps/devicekit-power no longer exists in the tree

looking at the code, xbmc sends a dbus message to see if the kit exists and waits for a response. the dbus layers are what take so long.

i dont know much about dbus, but my understanding is that services register with dbus before they can receive messages. so if no one has registered for the messages, dbus shouldn't delay in returning an error.
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2010-12-22 18:19:54 UTC
in the mean time, xbmc now delays for 3 seconds rather than the default

bug 349523 should solve this one too, then?
Comment 6 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2011-03-12 09:26:35 UTC
i dont see how that bug would make a difference. the issue is with sending a message to a kit that doesnt exist. dbus should return an error immediately instead of picking its butt.

Please retry with 1.8.18 version and an updated system

Thanks
