Ah, it seems to fail even earlier than that:

checking whether hppa2.0-unknown-linux-gnu-gcc -E accepts -o... yes
sed: can't read s/ *-arch *^ *//g: No such file or directory
checking for hppa2.0-unknown-linux-gnu-ranlib... hppa2.0-unknown-linux-gnu-ranlib

Comment 5 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-11-02 01:23:00 UTC
This single addition prevents configure from trying to assign a value to a variable containing a dot (rb_cv_stack_grow_dir_hppa2.0=+1 in comment #0). Oddly enough, setting --target=parisc works equally well, so I am not sure if I should commit that.

Never mind. If I set this, it fails to find the right linker and defaults to ld, which fails because it doesn't understand -Wl,* arguments.
Comment 7 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-10-22 17:07:52 UTC
Fixed in 1.9.2_p290 by setting a faux --target=parisc which then gets config.guess to substitute a more correct hppa(-linux), ultimately resulting in configure not trying to assign a variable with a dot in it, properly figuring out the stack direction and so on.
Comment 8 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-10-23 19:43:44 UTC
Also http://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/6204

We should be able to get rid of the faux target hack for every release after rev 166. It looks like that may fix bug #388123 too, but I will run the test suite a few more times to be sure - I don't currently see whether that is definitely the case.
Comment 9 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-10-23 20:59:08 UTC
  23 Oct 2012; Jeroen Roovers <jer@gentoo.org> ruby-1.9.3_p194-r1.ebuild,
  ruby-1.9.3_p286.ebuild:
Remove HPPA target hack (bug #342819).

Apparently this also solves bug #388123. test_fork.rb now runs fine!
