Note that is intended to fix a security problem with poppler, so a quick resolution would be appreciated.

I see you are using distcc. Could you just in any case rule it out?

CMake checks whether the following compiles and if configure phase (where this test is performed) is not run through distcc as well...

IF(ICONV_FOUND)
  check_cxx_source_compiles("
  #include <iconv.h>
  int main(){
    iconv_t conv = 0;
    const char* in = 0;
    size_t ilen = 0;
    char* out = 0;
    size_t olen = 0;
    iconv(conv, &in, &ilen, &out, &olen);
    return 0;
  }
" ICONV_SECOND_ARGUMENT_IS_CONST )
  IF(ICONV_SECOND_ARGUMENT_IS_CONST)
    SET(ICONV_CONST "const")
  ENDIF(ICONV_SECOND_ARGUMENT_IS_CONST)
ENDIF(ICONV_FOUND)

I've tried without distcc on the original machine - and it broke, too.

Then again, I've now also tried on our dev machine which doesn't know anything about distcc and it went through fine. Armin76 also tested on his alpha and it worked there, too.

I'm at a bit of a loss why my second build (private machine, no distcc failed) but having native builds overrule it by 2:1, I'd venture that this isn't a bug of poppler but my setup.

Closing as invalid - will try to find the bug in my setup, though.
