Description Paul Varner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-09-15 19:07:59 UTC
I did an emerge -auDNv world and received the following:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/portage-2.2_rc82 [2.2_rc81] USE="-build -doc -epydoc -python3 (-selinux)" LINGUAS="-pl" 161 kB
*** Portage will stop merging at this point and reload itself,
    then resume the merge.
[ebuild N ] net-misc/tightvnc-1.3.10-r1 USE="java server tcpd" 1,827 kB
[ebuild R ] kde-base/plasma-workspace-4.5.1 USE="handbook python semantic-desktop* (-aqua) -debug -google-gadgets (-kdeenablefinal) (-kdeprefix) -qalculate -rss -xinerama" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] kde-base/kget-4.5.1 USE="handbook semantic-desktop (-aqua) -bittorrent% -debug (-kdeenablefinal) (-kdeprefix) -sqlite -webkit% (-plasma%*)" 0 kB
[blocks B ] net-misc/tightvnc ("net-misc/tightvnc" is blocking net-misc/tigervnc-1.0.1_p20100914-r2)

Total: 4 packages (1 upgrade, 1 new, 2 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 1,988 kB
Conflict: 1 block (1 unsatisfied)

 * Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
 * installed at the same time on the same system.

  (net-misc/tigervnc-1.0.1_p20100914-r2, installed) pulled in by
    net-misc/tigervnc required by @world

(net-misc/tightvnc-1.3.10-r1, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    net-misc/tightvnc required by @world

What threw me off is that tightvnc is not installed and not listed in the world file. The problem turned out to be an outdated entry in /etc/portage/packages:

My reading of man portage states that these packages are included in the system set. If the error message had stated required by @system, I would have been able to track down the issue much more quickly.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge net-misc/tigervnc
2. add '*net-misc/tightvnc" to /etc/portage/packages
3. emerge -auDNv world

Actual Results:
net-misc/tightvnc required by @world in blocked packages message

Expected Results:
net-misc/tightvnc required by @system in blocked packages message

Comment 1 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2010-09-15 23:46:26 UTC
The problem is that depgraph currently collapses @selected and @system into @world. The declean code keeps them separated, and we need to employ that approach for all depgraphs.
Comment 3 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2010-09-19 07:15:12 UTC
This is fixed in and 2.2_rc84.
