Description Juergen Rose 2010-09-05 22:11:22 UTC
For some hours a lot of programms crashes (evince, evolution, firefox, gnome-panel ...) with dbus errors. After reboot I can't login via gdm.
In .xsession-errors I find:
...
Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/00-xhost
Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/10-xdg-menu-gnome
Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/11-xdg-menu-KDE-4
Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/49-keychain

Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/50-ssh-agent
Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/70-seahorse-agent

Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/90-consolekit
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /usr/bin/ck-launch-session /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/seahorse-agent --execute /usr/bin/ssh-agent -- gnome-session
process 12357: arguments to dbus_connection_ref() were incorrect, assertion "connection != NULL" failed in file dbus-connection.c line 2556.
This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.
D-Bus not built with -rdynamic so unable to print a backtrace

Reproducible: Always

I'm also having this problem. Downgrading did not fix it. Consolekit and NetworkManager init scripts also crash with dbus assertion errors.
Comment 2 Juergen Rose 2010-09-07 13:13:06 UTC
I also reemerged dbus, consolekit, seahorse, openssh and gnome-session without improving the login-situation.
Comment 3 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-09-08 19:37:23 UTC
please paste output of emerge -pv dbus
Comment 4 Juergen Rose 2010-09-09 18:31:19 UTC
root@thinkpad:/root(4)# emerge -pv dbus

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

please try with 1.2.24-r2
Comment 6 Juergen Rose 2010-09-14 16:18:17 UTC
With dbus-1.2.24-r2 the problem remains. If I try to login into the normal gnome-session or into the failsave gnome-session, the session is shorter than 10s, and in .xsession-errors I find:
...
Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/50-ssh-agent
Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/70-seahorse-agent

/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /usr/bin/ck-launch-session /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/seahorse-agent --execute /usr/bin/ssh-agent -- gnome-session

This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

All packages which are relevant for me for login into a gnome-session are reemerged in the last two days:

       merge time: 36 seconds.

Login into kde-4.5.1 is possible. In .xsession-errors I find:
...
Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/90-consolekit
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /usr/bin/ck-launch-session /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/seahorse-agent --execute /usr/bin/ssh-agent -- /usr/bin/startkde

kbuildsycoca4(8853) KBuildServiceFactory::createEntry: Invalid Service :  "/usr/share/applications/kde4/koffice.desktop"

...Too much output, ignoring rest...

Why is kde generating so much output that .xsessions-errors already some seconds after login overflows?

But my system with 2GB RAM and 2.00GHz Pentium(R) M processor is to old to run kde, everything goes very slowly.

If I try to start XFCE after leaving the kde-session, I see only a grey screen.
In .xsession-errors I find:
Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/90-consolekit
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /usr/bin/ck-launch-session /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/seahorse-agent --execute /usr/bin/ssh-agent -- startxfce4

<stdin>:2:3: Fehler: ungültige Präprozessordirektive #or
<stdin>:3:3: Fehler: ungültige Präprozessordirektive #Xft
<stdin>:4:3: Fehler: ungültige Präprozessordirektive #Xft

If I kill all X and xfce4 processe from the console and I can login again in xfce. But I get exactly the same effects.

I also can login into openbox, I can then open the openbox menus and a terminal window. But also there I find a dbus-error in .xsessen-errors:
Xsession: run scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d i=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/90-consolekit

Comment 7 Juergen Rose 2010-09-18 09:27:09 UTC
It seems me that this problem has the same reason as Bug 297483. At least reemerging dbus-glib solved the problem for me.

But now a second small problem remained: While I could not login into gnome-session I tested several desktops kde, xfce and windowmager e16, openbox, ....
Now I am logged in a gnome-session, but I have e16 as windowmanager and I can't find no menu entry under system to change the window manager. The only I found is to change the gconf entry desktop->gnome->session->required_component->windowmanager with gconfeditor.
Is there an other way?
Comment 8 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-09-18 09:52:50 UTC
Looks like a scenario with glib upgraded, and dbus-glib not rebuilt. The other issue is for Gnome maintainers, changing window managers in Gnome is not a freedesktop-bugs.
Comment 9 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2010-09-18 10:19:51 UTC
This is then a dupe of bug 297483

About the second problem, I would suggest you to open a different bug report (-> one bug report per problem, otherwise it's a bit messy) but, in this case, easier WM handling is really an upstream problem, then, you should probably search for opened bugs about this directly in upstream (bugzilla.gnome.org) and, if no one opened, open a new one.

Also, remember that exporting WINDOW_MANAGER variable to desired window manager should also work for changing between them (see man gnome-wm)

Comment 10 Juergen Rose 2010-09-18 20:14:50 UTC
I did not think, tha the second problem is a bug. I supposed, that I am simply not clever enough to find the proper configuration menu.
Comment 11 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-09-18 21:13:26 UTC
So what's the topic of this bug now ?
Comment 12 Juergen Rose 2010-09-19 07:19:14 UTC
The topic was the dbus error, which can be removed by reemerging dbus-glib.

It would be good, if the necessity to reemerge dbus-glib could be detected automatically by revdep-rebuild or someway else.
Comment 13 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-09-19 08:25:29 UTC
And that's the topic of bug #297483.
