Description Mikayel Grigoryan 2010-09-01 18:09:30 UTC
Activated KMS in 2.6.34-r6 and since then X server crashes every day only hard reboot is an option. With earlier versions of gentoo-sources system has also been very unstable with KMS.
All runs well when KMS is disabled.
Cannot say what steop exactly causes crash but each time it is one of following

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open mail-client/thunderbird-3.1.1
OR
2. watch video with mplayer, switch between windows. Last time did not even switch windows it just crashed when running flv video in mplayer.
OR
3. Watch flash animation in www-client/opera-10.61

Actual Results:
System just hangs. Full system crash, only press power button for 5 seconds is an option.

Expected Results:
Just run wuthout crashes.

Nothing is written to either /var/log/messages or any other log file.

Comment 6 Mikayel Grigoryan 2010-09-13 12:16:39 UTC
I also tried vanilla kernel 2.6.35.4 but again experiennced system crashes. No big joy for my system with newer kernels as well.
Are there any settings for some debugs or workarounds agains crashes?
Comment 7 DEMAINE Benoît-Pierre, aka DoubleHP 2010-09-13 15:39:23 UTC
Mikayel, please write your comment about 2.6.35 in bug 328889 which claims the issue is fixed in 2.6.35-r4 . What is wrong from your point of view. And please, mark yourself your/this bug as dup of it.

To get more debugs, as this bug, for me, produce KP, and since syslogs in /var are not sync ... we need to log the serial port: set for kernel console=ttyS1 (check exact syntax), and record the things from an other computer. Some people also told me to try to save to floppy: try console=fd0 . Or, maybe ... if you have a spare disk, console=/dev/sdd could do ? as the write to console is sync, there should be less buffer problems than with /var/log/message that depends on the syslogd daemon ...

As I explain in bug 328889 , the bug happens to me under several forms.
