Description Oleg Mikheev 2010-06-25 22:11:46 UTC
KMS modeset results in a blank screen. Except for the screen everything else is functional.
Seeing this on linux-2.6.34-gentoo-r1 and ThinkPad X201i

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enable KMS modsetting on linux-2.6.34-gentoo-r1 on X200, X201 etc
2. Boot

Actual Results:
Black screen, all other devices are functional

Expected Results:
Working screen

Kernel linux-2.6.32-gentoo-r7 didn't have that problem.
This issue is coming from Vanilla.
The last working vanilla was 2.6.32.15.
The issue started to reproduce with kernel 2.6.33 and is still present in the current stable 2.6.34.
The patch to 2.6.34 is proposed in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/554569 or some other place linked from there.
The patch doesn't work for me.
This issue doesn't seem to be a duplicate of http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=313915

The main point of this bug: please don't release a new stable kernel before a good patch is produced for the mainline, or some other resolution becomes available at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/554569
The number of X2xxx ThinkPad users is significant.

The point is, we do our best to solve bugs before we stabilize a kernel, but we cannot anticipate any bugs that appear after a stable request, nor can we expect to have zero bugs. We make sure wide ranging bugs don't exist as well as critical security bugs.
Comment 3 Oleg Mikheev 2010-06-27 21:38:53 UTC
Ok, I was making my previous statement not being aware of gentoo-sources-2.6.33-r2 being stabilized at the very same moment :)
My concern was 2.6.34 and I was asking devs to keep an eye on the blank screen bug.
Kernels prior to 2.6.34 have another issue with USB not functional after suspend/resume (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/566149). Not sure if it is worth filing here though.

Sorry once again - that patch to 2.6.34 actually worked for me.

Help me out so I am clear.

Bug is on 2.6.33 and 2.6.34. Is this the patch that fixes the issue for both versions?

You can open a separate buug for the usb problem if you like.
