Name resolution of rsync.europe.gentoo.org has been displaying problems on some locations since April 2010. On this locations, where resolution of rsync.europe.gentoo.org is failing, resolution of similar domains still works (such as rsync.pt.gentoo.org, rsync.de.gentoo.org or rsync.fr.gentoo.org). Is this your own machine or from your Internet Service Provider? Is it reachable by ping or other DNS queries? Does `dig rsync.europe.gentoo.org @141.1.1.1` work? Funny, `dig rsync.europe.gentoo.org @4.2.2.2` doesn't.
On the results posted, 10.0.0.1 is just my router (airport extreme). ping rsync.europe.gentoo.org doesn't work either, of course. dig rsync.europe.gentoo.org @141.1.1.1 works, @4.2.2.2 doesn't work.
Hi! I have very similar issues on two of my computers (though the laptop at university synced ok today). From my home network I get: $ time dig rsync.europe.gentoo.org ;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode. ; <<>> DiG 9.4.3-P5 <<>> rsync.europe.gentoo.org ;; global options: printcmd ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached real 0m33.025s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.001s But these commands both worked: dig rsync.europe.gentoo.org @141.1.1.1 dig rsync.europe.gentoo.org @4.2.2.2
Guys, if your local resolver is timing out but other resolvers work that points blame to the resolver you are using not the authoritative server (our DNS)
Then how to deal with it? I have tried to restart router, reboot in win and back, but no change. Besides at university it worked only today.. last week it didn't work there also.
Well, you can use a reliable DNS resolver. I setup net-dns/unbound on my localhost for this purpose because my ISP DNS wasn't reliable. :) I'll gather some more opinions about this issue and report back.
At home on my laptop I still get this: $ dig rsync.europe.gentoo.org ;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode. ;; Connection to 192.168.1.1#53(192.168.1.1) for rsync.europe.gentoo.org failed: connection refused. The timeout in my previous message is for another computer at different network/ISP. Both of them worked fine up until the last week.
Suspected problem: Something in the path from us to you does not support UDP DNS packets > 512 bytes. So I removed two mirrors from the Europe rotation to get us below that number. Does the dig command work now?
Yes, now it works. Is it possible to test my router for this DNS packet size support? Or that can't be an issue?
It is at the resolver level. As it was explained to me: 21:19 <@robbat2|na> (us) -- (resolver) -- (client) 21:19 <@robbat2|na> the 512 limit causes problems at both of those -- links 21:19 <@robbat2|na> if the resolver is limited There are currently 26 servers in the rsync.europe rotation. If we go above that, the problem will re-appear. %% dig rsync.europe.gentoo.org|grep MSG ;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 509 509 < 512. I'm going to close this bug. Thanks for raising the issue.
