If you clear out all libpng and emerge when ~anmd64 is your arch you will get 1 unversioned library and no symlinks in /usr/lib64.
 
However forcing the emerge to load the -r2 ebuild creates all libraries and symlinks.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. unmerge libpng, like when downgrading after libpng 1.4 issues.
2. clear all symlinks out of /usr/lib64
3. emerge libpng  
 It will select the 1.2.43-r3 which installs nothing

Actual Results:  
only libpng12.so.0 of about 15K is put in /usr/lib/64

Expected Results:  
Multiple libraries and symlinks or portage to detect and first install the -r2
