the problem is in absence of symlink libpng12.so -> libpng12.so.0.43.0 I think its a bug in the libpng:1.2 ebuild

It's not creating the library symlink. Adding this line to the end of src_install works: dosym libpng12.so.0 /usr/$(get_libdir)/libpng12.so || die
Disregard that last; the problem is references to libpng-1.2 in pkgconfig files. Run 'grep -l libpng12 /usr/lib/pkgconfig/*.pc' and re-emerge any packages that it shows up in.

The only package I get with this is libsexy. I attempted to reemerge it, but it also fails with the same link error as libgphoto.
The -lpng12 on the link line must be coming from somewhere; if not a .pc file then a -config script or similar. I'd suggest examining config.log to see where the culprit might be (search for the first instance of -lpng12).
I reinstalled libpng and received the message "If revdep-rebuild fails to work them run /usr/sbin/libpng-1.4.x-udate.sh (At your own risk)". revdep-rebuild had failed to work and lafilefixer --justfixit didn't do the trick, so I took the risk, and the problem was solved.Libgphoto2 compiled with no problems. The same with gnumeric.
