I need more detail. They do have both LIBS and LDFLAGS variables.
LDFLAGS="`pkg-config --silence-errors --libs openssl`" ^^^^^^^ wrong variable. This will cause a call to $(CC) -lssl conftest.o The same applies to most of ${S}/m4/nut_check_*.m4. Not sure why they reinvented the wheel, given that PKG_CHECK_MODULES does it all on its own.
to clarify, simply renaming those vars (LDFLAGS to LIBS) fixes this, even a simple sed should work, I haven't tested it thoroughly though
