The problem seems to stem from an unescaped # symbol at configure.ac:133 that gets later interpreted as the beginning of a comment in the generated Makefiles. ASCPPPOST="sed '/^ *#/d; s,//.*,,; s/% /%/g; s/\\. /./g'" Escaping the hash symbol with a backslash on that line fixes the problem for me. USE=-pic is a dumb configuration in the first place
