what LANG/LOCALE ? if you're not using the default, what if you use LANG=C ?
I don't have LANG or LOCALE set (it means I don't have LANG=<something> LC_ALL=<something> in my .bash_profile file. correct?) if I use export LANG=C xmms the same thing happens

I don't know. Some times later after I opened this bug, my gentoo system crashed (playing with ~x86), so I'm now running Fedora Core 1 until java on gentoo is slower. So I'm closing this bug.
